History and Traditional Use
Sweet almond oil is one of the oldest botanical oils used by humanity for both nutritional and cosmetic purposes. Archaeological evidence indicates that the almond (Prunus dulcis) was first domesticated in the Middle East around 4000 BCE or earlier. Native to Western and Central Asia, almonds gradually spread throughout the Mediterranean region and were cultivated across North Africa and Southern Europe. By the 19th century, almond cultivation had expanded to India and California, becoming an important global agricultural crop.
The botanical term “amygdalus” comes from the Greek word for almond, and the amygdala—the region of the brain responsible for emotional processing and memory—takes its name from its almond-like shape.
In Ancient Greece and Rome, almond oil was widely used to soften the skin, nourish the hair, and care for infants. It also held an important place in Ottoman medicine and traditional Middle Eastern skincare practices. In Ayurveda, almonds and almond oil have traditionally been associated with reproductive health, musculoskeletal wellness, and cognitive function, and were regarded as a tonic for the brain, blood, and skin. These uses originate from traditional medical systems.
Almond oil exists in two principal forms:
Bitter almond oil (Prunus dulcis var. amara) contains amygdalin, a compound capable of releasing cyanide through enzymatic breakdown, making raw consumption unsafe. Bitter almond oil used in cosmetics is generally a purified essential oil fraction.
Sweet almond oil (Prunus dulcis var. dulcis), by contrast, is a fixed oil extracted from edible almond kernels and is widely used today in cosmetic and dermatological formulations.
