History and Traditional Use
The niaouli tree (Melaleuca quinquenervia) has long been used by Indigenous Australian peoples to support respiratory health, cleanse the skin, and for the external care of wounds.
It is said that the botanical name was given by the British explorer Captain James Cook during his voyage from Australia in the mid-1700s.
Traditionally, niaouli was highly valued for its cleansing properties, which were widely believed to strengthen the body’s natural defenses. Centuries ago, in communities where the trees grew naturally, newborn babies were believed to be wrapped in niaouli bark to provide strength and protection.
Niaouli first attracted European attention during the nineteenth century, when coffee harvesters in New Caledonia used its leaves to treat wounds and help prevent infections. After its purifying properties became recognized in France, niaouli essential oil was widely adopted as a cleansing agent in hospital maternity wards.
