Although St. John’s Wort also contains hyperforin, flavonoids, and tannins, it is important to note that the oil’s characteristic red color is mainly associated with hypericin, not hyperforin.

The first-century Greek physician and botanist Pedanius Dioscorides, together with Galen and Pliny the Elder, documented the medicinal uses of the plant. Historical records describe its topical application for wounds, burns, bruises, and nerve pain.
During the Middle Ages, European folklore regarded St. John’s Wort as a plant capable of warding off evil spirits. This belief is cultural and historical in nature and is not supported by scientific evidence.
In traditional Anatolian folk medicine, St. John’s Wort has long been known as the “wound herb” and has been applied externally for cuts, burns, nerve pain, and muscle and joint discomfort.
