History and Traditional Use

The botanical name Origanum onites is derived from the Greek word origanon. Etymologically, the term originates from the Ancient Greek words oros, meaning “mountain,” and ganos, meaning “joy.” Together, they convey the meaning “joy of the mountain” or “brightness of the mountain.”

According to Greek mythology, the goddess Aphrodite created oregano as a symbol of happiness to bring greater joy to humanity. In Ancient Greece, newly married couples wore wreaths of oregano on their heads because it was believed to ward off evil spirits. Oregano was also placed on the graves of loved ones, as it was thought to bring peace.

Since Ancient Greece, oregano has been regarded as the “herb of strength and life.” Greek physicians, including Hippocrates and Maimonides, recommended it for its numerous health benefits.

In traditional Anatolian folk medicine, Origanum onites has been used in the form of herbal teas, steam inhalations, and oils to support infections, respiratory conditions, and digestive discomfort.

In modern aromatherapy, oregano essential oil is considered one of the most potent antimicrobial essential oils and is generally used at low concentrations and for short durations.

Benefits of Oregano Essential Oil

1. Antimicrobial and Antifungal Support

Oregano essential oil exhibits strong antimicrobial activity against numerous bacteria, fungi, and other pathogens. This activity is primarily attributed to its high carvacrol and thymol content.

In aromatherapy, it is commonly used to support environmental hygiene, immune function, and natural protection. [1] [2] [3]

2. Respiratory System Support

Thanks to its sharp, penetrating aroma, oregano essential oil is commonly used through inhalation to provide supportive relief during:

  • Upper respiratory tract discomfort
  • Nasal congestion
  • Common cold periods

Its antimicrobial activity may also help support respiratory hygiene. [4] [5]

3. Digestive System and Carminative Support

Traditionally, oregano has been used to help relieve sluggish digestion, intestinal gas, and digestive discomfort. In essential oil form, it is utilized in aromatherapy to provide stimulating and balancing support for digestive processes. [6] [7]

4. Immune System Support

Due to its potent antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, oregano essential oil is considered one of the key aromatherapeutic oils for supporting immune function. It is especially popular during seasonal transitions. [8] [9]
