Technically, jojoba is not an oil but a liquid plant wax ester. It is one of the natural lipids that most closely resembles human sebum in its chemical structure, making it one of the most frequently referenced botanical ingredients in dermatological research.

History and Traditional Use
Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) is native to the Sonoran Desert of North America and is an exceptionally resilient desert plant. For centuries, Indigenous peoples of the region, particularly the Tohono O’odham and Seri communities, crushed jojoba seeds to obtain the liquid wax, which they traditionally applied to cracked skin, wounds, sunburn, and hair.
Because of its ability to thrive under harsh desert conditions, jojoba became a symbol of resilience and vitality.
Jojoba gained worldwide importance during the second half of the 20th century. Following restrictions on the commercial use of whale oil in the 1970s, the cosmetics industry searched for sustainable alternatives. Due to its chemical similarity to sperm whale oil, jojoba became one of the most promising natural replacements.
Although technically a liquid plant wax rather than a true oil, jojoba quickly became one of the most valuable ingredients in modern dermocosmetics because of its excellent oxidative stability and remarkable similarity to human sebum.
Today, jojoba is cultivated in several countries, particularly the United States, Mexico, and Israel, and is widely used throughout the cosmetic industry for its skin-balancing properties.
