Grapeseed oil is a lightweight and fast-absorbing carrier (fixed) oil particularly valued for oily and acne-prone skin, the appearance of dark spots, antioxidant protection, and skin barrier balance.

Its high concentration of linoleic acid (Omega-6) and powerful polyphenols, particularly proanthocyanidins, has made it an important subject of dermatological research.

Chemical Composition (Key Active Components)

The biological properties of grapeseed oil are associated with its rich fatty acid and polyphenol content, including:

  • Linoleic acid (Omega-6, approximately 65–75%) – the principal fatty acid
  • Oleic acid (Omega-9)
  • Palmitic acid
  • Proanthocyanidins (OPCs)
  • Tocopherols (Vitamin E)

These constituents form the basis of the oil’s antioxidant, sebum-balancing, and skin barrier-supporting properties.

 

History and Traditional Use

Grapeseed oil has been known and used for more than 6,000 years. In ancient Europe, physicians used extracts obtained from grape seeds and leaves in ointments prepared especially for skin and eye conditions.

Grape leaves were traditionally applied as bandages to help control bleeding from wounds and soothe inflammation associated with haemorrhoids. Unripe grapes were consumed to relieve constipation and discomfort caused by overeating, while overripe grapes were used to help ease nausea and certain skin conditions. Raisins were also regarded as a natural digestive aid and as a food that supported liver function.

In Ayurvedic medicine, grapes were known as “Drakshaa Phalottamaa,” meaning “the finest of fruits.” They were included in traditional formulations prepared for conditions such as poor memory, fatigue, depression, hypertension, indigestion, and bloating. In alternative medicine practices, grapes were also used to soothe sore throats, strengthen the voice, relieve nausea, and support the care of skin problems.

During the 16th century, grapeseed oil production became more systematic in Europe. In 1569, Emperor Maximilian II reportedly granted a musician the exclusive right to produce grapeseed oil for the protection and maintenance of musical instruments.

At that time, the seeds were mixed with water in large barrels, left in sealed containers, and regularly pounded into a paste. Gentle heat was then applied to separate the oil from the water.

Over time, grapes spread throughout North America and became one of the world’s most widely cultivated fruits. As production increased, grapeseed oil became commonly used in cooking, cosmetics, and soap making. During the 20th century, it also became an important subject of scientific research.

Thanks to its high linoleic acid content, phytosterols, and antioxidant compounds, grapeseed oil is now considered a valuable ingredient in modern skincare.

  • Grapeseed oil is generally well tolerated.
  • It is moderately susceptible to oxidation and should be stored in a cool place.
  • In rare cases, irritation may occur on very sensitive skin.
