Castor oil is a highly valued carrier (fixed) oil distinguished by its exceptionally high viscosity and rich texture. It is widely used to support hair, eyebrow, and eyelash care, strengthen the skin barrier, promote wound healing, and provide anti-inflammatory support.
Unlike most vegetable oils, castor oil is biochemically unique because of its exceptionally high ricinoleic acid content. Modern research has focused particularly on its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial potential.

Note: Although the castor seed itself is toxic because it contains ricin, properly cold-pressed castor oil does not contain ricin.

The therapeutic properties of castor oil are primarily attributed to its exceptionally high ricinoleic acid content, including:
- Ricinoleic acid (approximately 85–90%) – the primary active constituent
- Oleic acid
- Linoleic acid
- Palmitic acid
- Stearic acid
These components are responsible for castor oil’s anti-inflammatory, moisture-retaining, and film-forming properties.
History and Traditional Use
Castor oil (Ricinus communis) is a multipurpose botanical oil that has been used for thousands of years. Historical records document its use in the Ebers Papyrus of Ancient Egypt (around 1500 BCE) as well as in Indian texts dating to approximately 620–650 BCE. Historical sources also indicate that castor oil was introduced from India to China about 1,400 years ago, where it became part of traditional medical practice.
In traditional medicine, castor oil has been used for hair and scalp care, wound protection, and, when taken internally, as a laxative and digestive aid.
Within Ayurveda and traditional folk medicine, it has also been used to support joint discomfort and intestinal parasite management. For topical use, castor oil has traditionally been applied to the hair, eyebrows, and eyelashes to help improve their appearance and density.
Castor oil is notable for its exceptionally high concentration of monounsaturated fatty acids, particularly ricinoleic acid (approximately 85–90%). It also contains vitamin E (tocopherols and tocotrienols), phospholipids, and phenolic compounds. These bioactive constituents contribute to its nourishing, moisturizing, and protective properties.
