WHAT IS CANKER SORE?
Canker sore is a painful disease of the mucous membrane of the mouth. Canker sore, also known as mouth sore among the people, is an oral ulcer that is seen in 20% of the population and causes pain, itching and burning. It is also called aphthous ulcer or aphthous stomatitis. It is common in the oral cavity, inside the cheeks, gums, tonsils, especially near the tongue or inside the lips. Although canker sore usually occur singly, they can occur more than once in different regions at the same time. Sometimes while one heals, the other can occur. They are sores with a cottony appearance, round or oval, with a yellowish to grayish-white base and often surrounded by an inflamed red border. Canker sore smaller than 1 centimeter in diameter are called minor canker sore, and canker sore larger than 1 centimeter are called major canker sore.
How severe the canker sore pain is varies from person to person. Sometimes talking, eating or even swallowing causes pain.
If not treated timely and properly, canker sore tend to recur.
