History and Traditional Use
Clove buds derive their name from the Latin word clavus, meaning “nail,” referring to their distinctive shape. In the Spice Islands of Indonesia, considered the native home of the clove tree, it was traditionally customary to plant a clove tree whenever a child was born, symbolically linking the child’s life to the life cycle of the tree.
Clove (Syzygium aromaticum) has been used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. Historical records indicate that as early as 200 BC, it was used in China to freshen the breath and help protect against infections.
In Ayurvedic and Unani medicine, clove became well known for its analgesic, warming, and antimicrobial properties.
The clove trade was under Chinese control until the 15th and 16th centuries, after which the Portuguese established a monopoly that lasted for nearly a century. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the Dutch became the dominant trading power. At that time, cloves were considered so valuable that they were often said to be worth their weight in gold in Britain. Later, French smugglers transported clove trees from the East Indies to islands in the Indian Ocean and eventually to the New World.
In modern aromatherapy, clove essential oil is regarded as one of the “powerful” essential oils because of its high biological activity and is generally used in low concentrations.
